NEW DELHI: Andy Rubin, former Googler and the CEO of Essential, couple of days go posted a blog post, confirming that the much-awaited Essential Phone has started shipping. However, he also gave another piece of information, which got overlooked --he also mentioned about the OS updates the device will receive.

Rubin, in his blog post, said that the Essential Phone will be receiving Android OS updates for next two years. This means that the smartphone, which has been launched with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, will surely get Android O and the major OS version after that.

Rubin further said that the Essential Phone will also be receiving security updates for three years, which is till 2020.

Running Android OS, one of the highlights of the handset is its 5.7-inch QHD (2560 x 1312 pixels) display that trumps the Galaxy S8 display as it leaves minimal bezel at the bottom.


"Technology moves so quickly that companies rush to release a new phone each year, but most times even that isn't fast enough. This deluge of devices isn't good for your wallet or for the planet. Essential Phone will get guaranteed Android OS updates for 2 years and will get monthly security updates for 3 years, so your phone will always be secure and have the latest features," he said in the post.


Rubin said that the company is planning to launch 'new wireless accessories' like the snap-on 360-degree camera in every few months. The smartphone comes with a 5.7-inch QHD (2560 x 1312 pixels) display with 19:10 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it features Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor along with Adreno 540 and 4GB RAM. It has 128GB UFS 2.1 inbuilt storage along with a single-SIM support. On the camera front, the Essential Phone comes with a 13MP Dual RGB + Mono camera with image fusion technology along with f/1.8 aperture and LED flash. The camera can record videos in 4K resolution. There is an 8MP front-facing camera as well with f/2.2 aperture and 4K video recording capability.


The Essential Phone is backed by a 3040 mAh battery and supports fast charging tech via USB Type-C. Some of the other features including are fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, NFC and GPS. The smartphone has a Titanium body, Ceramic back and Corning Gorilla 5 glass cover. There are four microphones as well. Interested users can buy the device in four colour variants - Black Moon, Stellar Grey, Pure White and Ocean Depths.
