Apple’s AR Glasses to come with 3D camera, no display: Report

Apple is rumored to be working on smart-glass technology, and patents for the same recently came to light. The tech giant will reportedly focus on the wearable segment for the future with smart glasses being the next big thing in the wearable space. However, Apple is not the only technological giant working with glass, and Google has in the past (unsuccessfully) dabbled in the space. The one thing different that Apple plans to do with smart glasses is to do away with the display altogether.

Apple will focus on integrating AR with its glasses and will come with Augmented Display instead of the traditional display. As a report in FT suggests, these are only the early days, and Apple is still experimenting with different concepts before finalizing on one. The one with the no display seems to be the most popular. Apart from doing away with the display altogether, the smart glasses will also feature 3D cameras. As mentioned in the report, “A particular area of experimentation, people familiar with the matter say, is a pair of AR glasses that might move cameras, sensors, and screens from the smartphone to the face.” “Yet despite the excitement surrounding ARKit, internally the company is still not sure what the most compelling application for such a headset might be.” In terms of features, the smart glasses are expected to come with Siri integration for voice commands, accelerometer, and other features. However, some reports have also suggested that the glasses will skip the camera to save battery. ALSO READ: Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 review: The iPad Pro alternative worth considering

Apple has in the past expanded its team to include those working on head-mounted gears and software similar to glass technology. Apple patents in the past have also hinted that the giant is developing eye-gear with advanced features. Though nothing has been clearly mentioned by Apple, critics and analysts have dropped hints at Apple shifting focus to wearables as the smartphone innovations reach their peak. Post the iPhone, Apple is said to be looking at making the smart glasses the next big product. A BGR.com report hints that the Apple Glasses will further come in different variants and sizes for men and women. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 6 32GB available for Rs 26,700 on Amazon India

Initially, Apple is expected to announce the smart glasses as an accessory to iPhones though they might soon go on to be independent devices. Apple is expected to announce an ARKit come September along with the iPhone 8, and the focus this year is believed to be more on the ARKit than on the phone itself. It could be laying the foundation for a future with smart glasses for Apple. The Apple smart glass is still some years away but it is a concept most likely to be the next big thin
