Motorola will upgrade Moto G4 Plus smartphones to Android 8.0 Oreo as ‘promised’ but it will take some time to do so, the company has said in a statement. Lenovo-owned Motorola found itself in a questionable spot after the company releases the list of Moto smartphone to be upgraded to Android Oreo. While the list included almost all the popular smartphones launched by the company over the last two years, it forgot to mention the Moto G4 Plus from the Moto G4 series announced last year.
Recently, Motorola faced backlash from disgruntled Moto G4 Plus users after promotional materials from last year surfaced once again. According to prior communication material from the company, Moto G4 Plus with Pure Android experience was promised to get Android N and Android O update in future. Apparently, Motorola missed that part and has now responded to do some damage control. In its statement, Motorola says, ‘It’s been brought to our attention that there were some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for Moto G4 Plus. This was an oversight on our part and we apologize for this miscommunication.’
Not leaving its customers with only warm feelings of apology, the company further confirmed that an Android Oreo OS upgrade will be released for the Moto G4 Plus smartphones. However, since the upgrade is ‘unplanned’, the company will have to adjust their upgrade schedule. It would not give away a specific timeline for the Moto G4 Plus Android Oreo release but users can stay assured that it is being worked on, as the company states
Why the confusion in the first place then? Going by what company tells, it follows the practice of providing at least one major OS upgrade per device from the Moto G series and thus it made Android 7.0 Nougat available for Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus last year in December. It shipped the two smartphones with Android 6.0 Marshmallow essentially. However, the company ‘mistakenly’ made a promise of offering Android O to Moto G4 Plus. And since ‘it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it (Moto G4) has already received, we will be upgrading Moto G4 Plus to Android O, stated Moto.
