Google confirms Pixel 2 launch date

Search giant Google has officially confirmed it will be launching its upcoming smartphones -- expected to be called Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL - on October 4.

Google has posted a video on YouTube that shows smartphone related questions being searched such as "What's wrong with my phone's battery?", "Why is my phone always out of storage?", "Why doesn't my phone understand me?" At the end, the video just has a remark "Funny you should ask", followed by the date, October 4.

Earlier today, a billboard (shared by Droid Life) set by Google in Boston, US, was spotted that read, "Ask more of your phone," along with the 'G' logo and the date "Oct. 4."

It is worth noting that Google last year also launched its Pixel 2 and the Pixel XL 2 smartphones on October 4. This date, however, contradicts the date that the tipster Evan Blass claimed last month in a tweet. He tweeted that the smartphones will be launching a day later and with Qualcomm Snapdragon 836 processor.

Google Pixel 2: Rumoured price, specs and launch date

We have already got a glimpse of what it might look like from leaks and what specifications it could carry. Although the official launch date hasn’t been confirmed, here is what we know about the Pixel 2 so far.

Until now it was rumoured that Google will launch its Pixel 2 and the Pixel XL 2 smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 836 processor. The processor was said to be the same as the Snapdragon 835 but with an increased clock speed. However, a report from XDA Developers refuted the claims and stated that the Snapdragon 836 doesn't exist. This indirectly means that the Pixel 2 and the Pixel XL 2 may have to settle for the Snapdragon 835, the processor that is also used in Samsung Galaxy Note 8, S8, S8+, LG V30, HTC U11 and OnePlus 5 among few others.

According to preliminary reports, Pixel 2, codenamed 'Walleye,' will retain the 4.97-inch Full-HD display from the original Pixel. It is supposed to come with 4GB of RAM. However, internal storage could be bumped to 64GB in the base model.

Also speculated is that the 3.5mm headphone jack won't be present in Google Pixel 2. This, in all likelihood, will make the smartphone thinner.

The bigger Pixel XL 2, codenamed 'Taimen,' could be the premium variant of the two smartphones and may sport an LG-made 5.99-inch OLED QuadHD (1440x2560 pixels) display.

The rumoured Pixel XL 2 with OLED panel could have a more saturated display for better colour vibrancy. As reported by The Investors website, Google few weeks ago offered to invest $880 million in LG's display-making division - LG Display. The report further added that Google wants to secure LG OLED panels for its 2017 Pixel smartphones.
